Kurdish Forces and Their Allies Closing in on Rebel-Held Aleppo

YPG forces prepare for further assaults on al-Qaeda-affiliated rebels in Aleppo, Syria.
After launching a powerful assault on Tuesday morning to liberate several sites from extremist rebels, the Kurdish Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (YPG, People’s Protection Units) and Jaysh al-Thuwar (SDF, The Revolutionary Army)—a mixed ethnic militia of Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmen—are advancing on the provincialcapital of the Aleppo governorate. In addition to their advance inside Aleppo, the YPG and SDF have imposed fire control over the Castillo roundabout, effectively cutting off the rebel supply route from the provincial capital to the northern Aleppo front. Nor do the YPG and SDF appear to be finished, as reports indicate they are preparing another significant assault on the al-Qaeda-affiliated rebels’ defenses near the strategic border city of Azaz. Should this prove to be the case, the YPG and SDF can surely expect to receive shelling from the Turkish military, which continues, contrary to public statements, to give succor to the rebel forces.

Iran to Ink Massive Arms Deal with Russia

Sukhoi_Su-30SM-Iran Plans $8 Billion Arms Deal with Russia678x326
Iranian military officials announced this week that they will purchase $8 billion in arms from Russia, the latest indicator of growing economic and military ties between the two US rivals.
With the recent lifting of sanctions against the regime in Tehran, Iran is promptly using its new found funds to  strengthen its military capabilities. Sputnik News reports that Iran will sign a massive arms deal with Russia, exceeding $8 billion USD. This deal would provide Iran with antiship missile systems, a fleet of new submarines, military helicopters, and advanced trainer aircraft. Most significantly, the deal would greatly enhance the quality and capabilities of Iran’s air force, which currently centers around an aging fleet of US fighters acquired before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
These are to be replaced with modern Sukhoi Su-30 mulitrole fighters, the premier Russian design. The deal would also significantly boost the power of the Iranian navy. Tehran’s hope is to radically enhance the regime's ability to repel potential Israeli or US attacks and increase its military's offensive capabilities in relation to those of its regional Arab rivals.

In the latest among a spate of attacks rocking Turkey, at least 28 people were killed and 61 wounded Wednesday when a car bomb targeting Turkish troops detonated in the heart of the capital Ankara. The blast struck a convoy of military vehicles stopped at a traffic light in downtown Ankara. No group has yet to claim credit for the attack. However, Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised swift retaliation against the perpetrators of the attack, which follows numerous deadly strikes in Turkey blamed on jihadists and Kurdish rebels.

Half a Dozen Buddhist Nationalist Monks Remanded over Protest near Homagama Court

Police escort the Buddhist monks to the Homagama Court
Sri Lankan magistrates remanded six ultranationalist Buddhist monks for their parts in unruly protests on 27 January 2016 over the remanding of their colleague Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera, the general secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS). The BBS is a militant Sinhala Buddhist nationalist organization, which over the past few years has played a part in a number of sensationalist incidents including attacks against Christian and Muslim places of worship. The remanded monks are members of related nationalist organizations, including the Ravana Balaya and Sinhala Ravaya Organisation.

ISIS Claims to Have Assassinated Retired Saudi General

Brig Gen Ahmed al-Asiri, Saudi Armed Forces, retired

ISIS outlets have claimed that one of the terrorist organization's operatives assassinated retired Saudi general Ahmed al-Asiri at his home in Jizan, near the Yemen border. Al-Asiri had served as the spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition conducting operations against Iranian-sponsored Yemeni rebels in Yemen's civil war. Saudi sources have yet to confirm the death of the general was an assassination, but social media traffic seem to grant the notion a high degree of validity. If it proves to be true, this would represent a significant security threat to the kingdom, highlighting its inability to protect even its most elite from attacks by the ISIS terrorist organization and its affiliates.

Dozens of Bosniak Families Have Migrated to ISIS-Controlled Territory with Their Children

Several dozen families from Bosnia have moved to ISIS-controlled territories in Syria and Iraq, dragging their young children along with them. Many of these children become orphans, as their parents die in combat and air strikes. Others are brainwashed by their parents and others into becoming child soldiers in the nefarious jihadi organization's war on humanity.

The plight of these children is deplorable; however, there is another factor that needs to be examined. The number of jihadis from Europe, including Bosnia and the Caucasus region of Russia, joining the ranks of ISIS and other terrorist organizations is alarming. These are folks who could easily pass as Westerners, and they are being radicalized at home and trained and battle-hardened in the killing fields of the Middle East. To believe that they are not to be found among the multitudes of "refugees" flooding into Europe and North America is the height of folly. Once here, they will use their training and ideology to radicalize and train Western Muslims and other refugees to kill us in our homelands. The recent lone-wolf attacks around the United States and Europe will pale in comparison to the bloodshed and terror that will be unleashed upon us at the hands of these evil, calloused jihadis. They celebrate death to the point that they are more than willing to sacrifice their own families, including young children, on the altars of the twisted version of their faith. So the next time someone tells you that we have nothing to fear from the refugees because they are coming as families, remind them of what these scumbags are doing to their families in the Middle East. If anyone thinks they won't do the same here, they are mindless fools.

Turkish PM confirms shelling of Kurdish forces in Syria

So our supposed NATO ally is more concerned with bombing the daylights out of the only consistently reliable anti-ISIS/anti-Assad forces in the entire Syrian debacle. With friends like this, why do we need enemies in the region? The Kurds have stood by us in every conflict in the region, and we have repaid them with the shaft every single time. It appears we are determined to be consistent this time as well.

US' sale of F-16s to Pakistan: India expresses disappointment

The Indian government has every right to be livid about this! Why on Earth would the US provide the region's key sponsor of terrorism with such sophisticated weaponry? Pres. Bush was a fool to make Pakistan his partner in the global war on terror, and Obama has been more the fool for maintaining that relationship. The country's intelligence service was undoubtedly complacent at best in hiding bin Laden from us, more likely culpable. India is our natural ally in the region. It's a proven democracy that largely respects the rights of its minorities. It has been fighting Islamic terrorism far longer than the US has, and yet we treat it like this. Shameful.
